Dendrobium Pure Doreen

I originally purchased the parent plant of this hard-cane dendrobium two years ago as a bareroot. It was labelled "Pure Doreen". I can't seem to find pictures of this cultivar online to confirm, but I hope it's not a mislabel. I have reason to be skeptical because I have received too many orchid mislabels. 

Only afterwards did I notice something didn't look right with the canes.  It turned out that the plant was dying, but it did produce a long beautiful spike of flowers, its swan song of sorts. Fortunately, all was not lost, as it also produced a keiki just before it died.

The keiki grew slowly, as most orchids do, and finally graced me with its lovely maiden blooms. Its purple and white two-toned flower is quite pleasing.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - April 2014

This is a rather brief GBBD post. I was busy over the last week and didn't take any pictures. This afternoon, on arriving home, I realized that it is GBBD. I took my camera and was only able to get one photo of a phalaenopsis before darkness fell.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day! The orchids seem to be loving this month. Many are in bloom while others have begun spiking.

The dendrobium anosmum orchid has produced its annual inflorescence a month earlier than last year. There are more blooms too, as a result of better care given.

I love roses but roses do not love the Tropics. I am always on the lookout for cultivars that can grow here. The shrub rose 'Belinda's Dream', with its many pink petals, seems to be doing alright.

Phalaenopsis - Dtps Sogo Golden 'A07867'

Probably the most common and popular orchid in temperate regions, phalaenopsis orchids aren't kept as much as hard-cane dendrobiums, vandas, cattleyas and epidendrums in the Tropics.

I don't have much experience with phals. I've tended to stay away from them in favour of hard-cane dendrobiums.

This little doritaenopsis is a recent impulse purchase. The foliage was damaged but it had a keiki and two developing spikes. 

One spike produced three flowers and the other only two. Not very floriferous but the medium-small yellow flowers look nice on the compact plant.

Keep phals out of direct sunlight and fertilize lightly but regularly. The potting media must be free draining but never allow it to completely dry out.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - August 2013

After several months of never quite getting the timing right due to several factors, I am finally participating in Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day for the first time. I guess this makes me a veteran garden blogger now. Hehe.    

 This hardy compact cattleya blooms several times a year. More spikes are developing. It puts on quite a show.

The smallish flowers fade into a lighter pink as they age.
